Name the Duo That Changed EDM
Kacie Van Stiphout
If there's one duo that knows how to roll with what's hot and trendy, it's The Chainsmokers. Alex Pall and Drew Taggart make up EDM's dream team. They've taken DJ culture to a whole new level by releasing two albums (one of which went Platinum, and the other Gold), and currently touring the country.
To prep for their stop at Golden 1 Center on their World War Joy Tour, here are five major moments in Pall and Taggart's climb up the charts.
1. When they capitialized on the #Selfie
The Chainsmokers got their start back in 2014 when their music video for "Selfie" went viral. It's up to over 500 million views on YouTube and immediatley skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic chart. Really, the duo was just saying what we were all thinking in 2014. "Can you guys help me pick a filter?"
2. Their iconic collab with Halsey
If you ask anyone, even Google, what song made The Chainsmokers "famous" it's their epic collaberation with Halsey. "Closer" became an instant classic and was the talk of social media back in 2016 after the three performed at the MTV VMAs. The steamy performance lead to a consecutive 10-weeks at No. 1.
3. How they basically crashed YouTube
The DJ powerhouse linked up with British band, Coldplay in 2017. The rest is record-breaking history. Without any warning, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay performed "Something Just Like This" at the BRIT Awards before releasing their lyric video to YouTube. In just 24 hours it was viewed over 9-million times, breaking the all-time record. How many views now? Oh, just a casual 1.6 billion.
4. They sit in the highest-paid (DJ) booth
If you're looking at booking the DJ's for an upcoming wedding or birthday, you might want to re-think your budget. The average income for The Chainsmokers... $46 million dollars. This going-rate knocked off frontrunner of six consecutive years, Calvin Harris. But, topping the list of extreme DJ talent helps when you sell out the XS Nightclub in Las Vegas and are on virtually every music festival lineup.
5. What if they actually headlined Fyre Fest?
In an interview with a radio station in 2019, the pair actually admitted to wanting to headline "the music festival that never was." They headlined the 2019 KAABOO Festival in the Cayman Islands earlier this year when Drew Taggart jokingly said it was, "what Fyre Fest was trying to do." We're just glad we didn't have to see them fight over a tent, or a sandwich.
So, do you need an excuse to blast beats and remixes from The Chainsmokers? Don't worry, we've got you covered with exclusive Spotify playlists brought to you by Golden 1 Center.
